BIPOC Month long Program

COVID-19 UPDATE: Vaccination against COVID-19 is required for all volunteers participating in this program. Please review our FAQs prior to applying.

Overview

No More Deaths maintains a year-round humanitarian presence in the borderlands of southwest Arizona. We work in remote corridors where Prevention Through Deterrence has pushed migration routes, hiking the trails and leaving water, food, socks, blankets, and other supplies. Under the direction of our medical team, volunteers provide emergency first-aid treatment to individuals in distress.

As a month-long and Desert Aid volunteer, you will work alongside trained long-term NMD volunteers, as well as a cohort of new local volunteers. You will be based in the southwest desert, doing humanitarian aid drops in remote areas as well as helping to maintain a consistent presence at our 24/7 humanitarian aid camp.

No More Deaths is a historically white organization, and is committed to working on addressing this issue within our work. In response to feedback from past and present Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) volunteers, we have decided to host another BIPOC only volunteer program for the months of April and May 2022. This will be our third year of programming.  The goal of this program is to intentionally create non-white No More Deaths spaces as a first step in a larger organizational shift toward centering, supporting, and uplifting the voices of people of color interested in this work.

The April and May 2022 BIPOC desert aid month long volunteer program focuses on breaking down some of the barriers that can make our volunteer program inaccessible. We encourage anyone who is interested in border solidarity work and identifies as BIPOC to apply to this volunteer program. Our capacity for training, hosting, and supporting volunteers is limited. We will accept 3 volunteers for this program. A four week commitment is required.

SCHEDULE

The BIPOC ML Program has been postponed. Please check back at a later date or email bipocmonthlong@nomoredeaths.org

Month Start & End Date Application
April & May 2022 Postponed.Deadline: Postponed.

Please note that you will need to commit to stay for the entire session or sessions that you are accepted for.

Trainings are held on the first Sunday of every program. New volunteers must arrive in Tucson the day before the training.

We ask that volunteers in the month-long program be flexible and available to plug in as needed. Work will vary based on a variety of factors, including the capacity of our long-term volunteers and conditions on the ground in Arizona. The work may involve trips to the desert camp in Arivaca, desert-aid trips in Ajo and other areas, supporting projects based in Tucson, and/or excursions into northern Mexico. Volunteers will take breaks at our volunteer house in Tucson.

VOLUNTEER FEE / TRAVEL STIPEND / GEAR

No More Deaths will provide a $200 travel stipend to each  accepted participant to help the cost of traveling to Tucson for the program. No More Deaths also understands that there are additional financial burdens to coming to the desert, therefore we can also offer a living stipend during program month.

All volunteers who are accepted into this program will be able to access the No More Deaths Gila Gear Lending Library free of cost.
