While we work in the area commonly known today as southern Arizona, we recognize that this place is so named and bounded as a result of occupation and colonization. The Sonoran Desert is a geographic and cultural region that covers parts of present-day Sonora, Arizona, California, and Baja California. Our work is concentrated in a part of this region that is the ancestral homeland of an indigenous people called the Tohono O’odham (southwestern Arizona stretching into northern Sonora). They have their own names for this land.
