Federal Judge Threatens NMD Volunteer with 25 Days Imprisonment |

At a hearing on Friday, December 4, No More Deaths volunteer Walt Staton was threatened with 25 days imprisonment for leaving clean drinking water along known migrant trails in the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge (BANWR). Federal Magistrate Jennifer Guerin denied Mr. Staton’s motion to modify or suspend his sentence pending appeal, and scheduled a probation violation hearing for December 21st.

13 Humanitarians to Be Arraigned on “Littering” Charges |

Tucson, AZ: On Wednesday, September 2, 13 volunteers from the humanitarian groups No More Deaths, Samaritans and Humane Borders will be arraigned on littering charges in federal Court. The 13 were cited on July 9th for placing clean drinking water along known migrant trails in the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge (BANWR), which lies along the international border. There will be a press conference immediately follow the hearing during which volunteers and their attorneys will discuss their citations, ongoing negotiations with federal officials and the course of action they intend to pursue.

Humanitarian Convicted of “Littering” Sentenced to Community Service, Banned from Refuge |

Tucson, AZ: On Tuesday, August 11 No More Deaths volunteer Walt Staton was sentenced to 300 hours of community service and 1 year unsupervised probation by federal Magistrate Jennifer Guerin. Staton was convicted on June 3, 2009 for littering, after placing clean bottles of drinking water along known migrant trails in the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge (BANWR). Staton is also banned from entering the refuge for one year.

Feds Hand Out 13 Littering Tickets |

Volunteers from No More Deaths, Tucson Samaritans and other members of the community intended to put jugs of water out for migrants crossing the Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge. Temperatures are expected to reach 110 degrees this weekend in southern Arizona.

Despite Multiple Invitations, Refuge Manager Fails to Respond to Request for Meeting Tucson, AZ – On Wednesday, July 8, No More Deaths, a Tucson-based humanitarian group, will announce their plans to distribute gallon water jugs on known migrant trails crossing the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge. The plans will be presented at noon at Southside Presbyterian Church, 317 W. 23rd St.

Humanitarians Await Response from Wildlife Refuge for Urgent Meeting |

Nearly 70 humanitarian, human rights, environmental and faith leaders and groups signed a letter sent to the manager of the Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge last Wednesday requesting a meeting within 14 days. The groups desire to establish an effective way to provide humanitarian assistance on the wildlife refuge that also respects the environment.
To date, no response has been received.
