NMD Supports Humanitarians on Trial in Italy

humanitarian aid is never a crimeNo More Deaths is asking for support for an international "Humanitarian Aid Is Never A Crime" campaign. The Italian government is currently prosecuting two Germans for "smuggling" after they rescued a group of African refugees on the Mediterranean Sea. We are appalled by the attempt to outlaw the courageous action of Elias Bierdel and Stefan Schmidt and by the attempt to destroy their livelihoods.

No More Deaths Volunteer Featured on Democracy Now!
An April 27, 2009 feature story on Democracy Now! interviews Dan Millis, who in February of 2008 found the body of a fourteen-year-old girl from El Salvador in the southern Arizona desert. Two days later, as he was leaving gallon-sized sealed jugs of water along the same migrant trails, he was ticketed for littering by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. He refused to pay the $175 fine and fought the littering ticket misdemeanor charge on the grounds that humanitarian aid is not a crime.

US District Court Upholds Conviction of Humanitarian
water jugTucson, AZ- An appeal of a littering conviction was denied on March 19 after oral arguments were heard ten days before.  Dan Millis, a volunteer with the border humanitarian aid group No More Deaths, has already filed to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to contest the ruling.

Millis was issued the citation in February of 2008 while putting water on remote migrant trails in the southern Arizona desert.  He and three other volunteers were confronted by law enforcement officers of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service while on the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge.  The officers issued a littering citation despite the five milk crates full of trash that the volunteers had picked up.

Winter 2008 Update

Dear No More Deaths Supporter,

From the desert to D.C., this year’s humanitarian efforts went far beyond anything we have done in the past. Thanks to your support, we did more first aid, put out more water, mapped more trails, trained more volunteers, documented more abuses and even sent a delegation to meet with lawmakers in Washington, D.C.; all surpassing previous years’ efforts. With your support, we have been able to build our capacity both in the desert and along the border to carry out our mission: End death and suffering on the US/Mexico border.

Abuse Documentation Update
Badly blistered feet and sprained ankles were treated for the first time at the Mariposa aid station... and the most heart-breaking story of the night was that of Angeles, a woman from Chiapas who fractured bones in her back climbing over the wall near Agua Prieta... she was in severe pain when she was made to walk back over the line from the Wackenhut bus.  We were able to provide her with extra strength tylenol and a place to lie down for the night (the NMD trailer), but she faces a difficult time as she recovers.  She was treated in the UMC ER, then released to the BP for processing. Keep her and all those migrating out of necessity in your prayers.
